SAN ANTONIO -- Hundreds of volunteers came out to Mission San Juan to harvest a cabbage crop with the San Antonio Food Bank Saturday morning.
- Largest one-day harvest event in the food bank's farming history
- Nearly 400 volunteers joined in harvesting
- 100,000 pounds of cabbage was harvested
It was largest one-day harvest event in the food bank's farming history.
One family made a day out of the event.
Volunteer Amber Fox, her husband Dave and grandson Jacob were among 400 volunteers harvesting these hefty heads at the four-and-half acres of land.
"[Jacob] can see a vegetable garden and a working progress of our food chain so that he can appreciate it more," Amber Fox said. "I think it helps with the enjoyment of the food whenever you are a part of the process."
The San Antonio Food Bank has been farming at Mission San Juan for 3 years now.
"It takes a couple years just to get the dirt ready." Michael Guerra of the San Antonio Food Bank said. “It was farmed decades ago but it sat and so now it's finally starting to produce."
The harvest produces more than a million servings of healthy food for families in need and all the vegetables picked are quickly distributed to area food banks.
"This is San Antonio original grocery store,” Guerra said. “300 years ago this was the grocery store, the farm and the river for the mission community."
It's tough work that is fun and educational for families.
"We've reviewed the mission and its history so we're going to walk around and explore," Fox said.
At the end, volunteers harvested a whopping 100,000 pounds of cabbage, all by hand.
