SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio leaders are taking a closer look at current trends in the city's population growth.

  • San Antonio among major cities experiencing population growth
  • Millennials increasingly moving to city

San Antonio Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales and members of the Comprehensive Plan Committee welcomed UTSA demography professor Rogelio Saenz to talk about current trends leading the city into the next 20 to 30 years.

He said San Antonio is one of the major cities experiencing population growth and a big group moving in are millennials, or people ranging in age from 18 to 34.

Of that group 58 percent are Latino, and the Latino population as a whole counts for two-thirds of the city's entire population.

"I think that it's important to get a comprehensive view of all the shifts that are taking place because the growth is taking place by people who remain here for example, but [also] people who were born here minus those who died and people who come here minus those who leave for other areas," said Rogelio.

City leaders hope to take information from meetings like this to help shape solid policy decisions as the area continues to grow.
