SAN ANTONIO - February is heart month and the American Heart Association is raising awareness.

  • February is heart month
  • Little Hats, Big Hearts helps raise awareness
  • Hats for newborns are locally knitted by volunteers

Amadeus Valentine Montanez is one of the first babies at Christus Santa Rosa-Westover Hills to get his handmade red hat. It's all part of the Little Hats, Big Hearts program.

All 3,000 hats are knitted locally by volunteers and will be delivered to 12 hospitals across the city. The program helps to build awareness about cardiovascular disease.

"Definitely just a surprise and a blessing to get to meet him. And he's just the best Valentine's gift I could ever ask for, well me and my boyfriend could ever ask for," said mother Victoria Aguilar.

"Congenital heart defects are the No. 1 birth defects in the United States and they affect more than 40,000 babies a year. So with this sweet little gift we're able to help parents be aware of that," said Tracey Kellogg with the American Heart Association.
