“Come out to the rodeo, it’s a great time,” Scholarship Committee Chair Jackie Simmonds said.
The Texas-sized rodeo has grown to be one of the largest events in the Alamo City, attracting about 2,000 visitors and 6,000 volunteers to help put on two weeks of country fun.
The event also gives back to the community, providing scholarships for kids.
“We’re really the only stock show that does this. During the course of the show we’ll give away about 240 scholarships,” Simmonds said.
First-time competitor Kaelena Trevino was there on opening day to show her 275-pound pig Becky, and also hoped to receive one of the scholarships.
“Just [hopes] she gets seen and people know she’s a good breeding pig,” Trevino said.
In between the rides and animals is finger-licking good food.
VIA Transit will also be offering park & ride services on weekends to the rodeo.
The rodeo will go until February 24.
