UPDATE: Police have identified the suspect as 38-year-old Matthew Reyes Mireles. Charges against him include, interfering with a police service animal, attempted capital murder of a police officer, aggravated assault against a public servant, and evading arrest with a vehicle.

SAN ANTONIO – A Bexar County Sheriff Office K9 was shot and killed after police exchanged fire with a suspect who led them on a high speed chase Friday night.

  • Pursuit started in Karnes County and through San Antonio
  • Suspect shot K9 after pursuit ended in attempt to flee
  • Police and suspect exchanged fire, suspect in critical condition, K9 died on scene

The sheriffs office said the pursuit started in Karnes County around 10 p.m. The suspect led several agencies on a chase that carried through Karnes County and San Antonio. After a lengthy pursuit, the suspect fired several shots at police before he stopped between Highway 1604 and Highway 151. From there, he fled from his vehicle and fired another shot at police.

 

 

 

The suspect walked away from police and then walked back towards them waiving his gun. Bexar County deputies made a decision to send a K9 after the suspect. The K9 was shot by the suspect and deputies returned fire, hitting the suspect several times.

Deputies performed CPR on the suspect and were able to revive him. He was taken to University Hospital in critical condition.

The K9 was pronounced dead on scene. The suspect faces multiple charges.

Around 5 a.m. on Saturday, Becker Animal Hospital had a procession for Chucky the K9. The procession started from the scene and then went down Hwy 151. The group made their way to I-410 and then to I-10 where they exited Vance Jackson and ended at Becker Animal Hospital.
