SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Fire Department is one step away from receiving global recognition.

  • Recommended for accreditation from the Commission of Fire Accreditation International
  • The agencies cite SAFD’s dedication to excellence as the reasons for the recommendations
  • Only 10 percent of the U.S. population is protected by accredited agencies

On Wednesday, the department announced they had been recommended for accreditation from the Commission of Fire Accreditation International through The Center for Public Safety Excellence.

CPSE works with the most progressive fire and emergency service agencies and most active fire professionals to lead fire and emergency service to excellence through continuous quality improvement.

The agencies cite SAFD’s dedication to excellence as the reasons for the recommendations.

“San Antonio is one of four major departments in the country to told it so, as far as the citizens, they should be extremely proud of this,” Fire Chief Charles Hood said.

Only 10 percent of the U.S. population is protected by accredited agencies.

In 2017, The San Antonio Fire Department was awarded a Class 1 Public Protection Classification rating by the Insurance Services Office, the highest score a fire protection community can receive.

Currently, only 72 agencies hold accreditation and an ISO Class 1 rating; the San Antonio Fire Department would become one of the largest departments (top 4) in the United States to hold both.
