SAN ANTONIO -- New numbers released by the City of San Antonio show the number of pedestrians killed on San Antonio's roadways last year was higher than the year before.

  • Deaths increased 11 percent
  • 49 pedestrians died in 2018, compared to 44 in 2017
  • City launched Vision Zero to educate community

The report, released by Vision Zero San Antonio, shows pedestrian deaths increased by 11 percent in 2018.

Forty-nine pedestrians died last year on San Antonio's roadways compared to 44 the year before. The number, however, is down compared to 2016. In 2016, 65 pedestrians lost their lives in San Antonio.

The city launched its Vision Zero initiative a few years ago to help educate the community and provide input on possible road improvements that could be made to bring the number of deaths down to zero.

According to the report, fatalities from automobiles were down 8.4 percent in 2018 compared to the previous year. Seventy-six people died in car crashes in 2018. Fatalities from motorcycle crashes fell 11 percent. Sixteen people died in motorcycle crashes in 2018.
