SAN ANTONIO - An inmate being held on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer was accidentally released from the Bexar County Jail.

• Ricardo Mujica served four years probation for state charge
• Inmate was supposed to be transferred to ICE but walked out of jail

Ricardo Mujica served four years probation for a state charge and was supposed to be transferred to ICE officials, but instead he walked out of jail. The Bexar County Sheriff's Office has launched an administrative investigation into the case, which caused them to look at ways to revamp the entire process moving forward.

We spoke with them earlier about details surrounding what happened.

"Earlier this morning around 7 a.m. Ricardo Mujica was in a line of individuals who were in the process of being released. He had finished his state charges for assault, but he was still here on an ICE detainer. ICE was here to pick him up, but ended up making it out before that time," said Bexar County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Johnny Garcia.

The Sheriff's Office said it's an immigration issue and illegal for them to pursue any further. They said it's not a situation that happens very often and is an isolated incident.

Currently, the Sheriff's Office says they don't have anyone with ICE detainers in their custody right now and the partial government shutdown is not impacting operations between ICE officials and the Bexar County Jail.

In terms of how Mujica walked out, authorities said in the booking area there are two lines, one for those being released and another for those with ICE detainers.

"In that process as far as the specifics, I don't have and how he made it to the line of those being released, but it was an error made on the releasing officer where those individuals being released, too many bodies were there that shouldn't have been there. Ricardo Mujica was one of them," Garcia said.
