SAN ANTONIO – Three historical San Antonio buildings were unveiled in LEGO style on Wednesday, ahead of the local LEGOLAND Discovery Center grand opening, set for May 2019.

  • The Alamo, Tower Life Building, The Alamodome
  • MINILAND San Antonio will have 1.5 million LEGO bricks
  • Buildings on display at Shops at Rivercenter until 2 p.m.

Each LEGOLAND location has its own MINILAND, a LEGO replica of the city it’s in.

MINILAND San Antonio will feature iconic buildings that make up the Alamo City skyline.

On Wednesday, three buildings set to be part of the skyline, were put on display for the public inside the Shops at Rivercenter until 2 p.m.

Fun Facts:

  • The Alamo: 180 hours to build, make of 17,000 LEGO bricks, weighs 84 pounds
  • Tower Life Building: 335 hours to build, 6.5 feet tall, features LEGO gargoyles
  • The Alamodome: 520 hours to build, 50,000 bricks, over 2,00 LEGO mini figurines

“These models were actually chosen by San Antonians through a month-long vote on our website. The Alamo received the most votes, followed by the Alamodome and Tower Life Building,” LEGOLAND Discovery Center general manger Jeremy Aguillien said.

The models were each digitally compounded and re-designed through LEGO technology. The Alamodome fans were also taken into account.

“We look at the fans in the Alamodome and we also like to create stories and scenes so if you look real closely, you can see a lot of shenanigans going on with all our LEGO minfigures,” Julian Pederson, builder with Merlin Magic Making, said.

The full MINILAND replication will include 1.5 million LEGO bricks and will be revealed during the May 2019 opening.
