KYLE, Texas -- After three years of construction, an $8.1 million rehabilitation project at a dam in east Kyle is now finished.

The Plum Creek Conservation District's Site 6 dam is one of 28 dams in the Plum Creek Watershed. The rehabbed dam will now meet the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality's criteria.

The Site 6 dam was built originally in the late 1960s and classified as a "low-hazard dam." Changes in urban growth made it necessary to make this into a "high-hazard dam."

"With the completion of this rehab work, I'm pleased to say that Plum Creek Site 6 now meets all the state and federal criteria required for high-hazard dams. And it should continue to provide those benefits for many decades to come," Brian Wenberg with Natural Resources Conservation Service Texas said.

The dam will provide flood protection for residential and commercial areas downstream in Hays County.
