SAN ANTONIO – Nearly $22 million worth of renovations are inching closer to Edison High School after San Antonio Independent School District voters passed a bond in 2016.

  • $450M going to 13 SAISD campuses
  • Renovations include athletic facilities, auditorium
  • Bond will also be used for technology improvements

The $450 million bond will benefit 13 campuses throughout the district beginning in December. Before then, district leaders are seeking input from the community.

“My main concern is the kids’ health in that gym [due to] the rust,” said Marie Castoreno, an Edison 1970s alumna.

The school has played an important role in Castoreno’s family. Her three children attended Edison in the 1990s and 2000s. This year, her grandson is attending as a freshman.

Castoreno has witnessed the high school transform over the last 40 years and now, it will take on another look.

“With this bond, it’s really just trying to finish up the work we couldn’t get done in the last 2010 bond,” said Pedro Martinez, district superintendent.

The campus will undergo a number of renovations in its athletic facilities and support areas. Other key areas of focus include a new field house, updated auditorium and technology improvements.

“When it comes to these spaces there are always a lot of opinions because they are elective programs,” Martinez said.

Martinez got an earful from parents during a public meeting on Wednesday.

“I hope that I get some answer and that things will be done,” said Castoreno.

Many of the concerns from parents included unforeseen construction issues, the installation of a black box for theater students and missing bleachers. While bleachers are not a part of the bond, district leaders said they are looking into other resources to fund the installation of new ones by spring 2019.

“We are trying to meet the needs and requests of everyone,” said Martinez.

The district is holding additional meetings through October.
