His academy classmates held a barbecue fundraiser to help with his medical expenses. Officer Rios was off-duty at the time and was on his way home from a cadet dinner when he was trying to get away from the situation.

He spent over a week in the hospital and underwent multiple surgeries and has since been doing well and recovering.

"The turnout today was absolutely amazing, it was great. We had better than I expected really. Whenever it is a brother officer, we all want to be there to help and we all try to do try and help out. So this is what it looks like,” said Leigh Holderby, of the San Antonio Police Department.

Organizers estimate about 1,000 people stopped by throughout the day. Officer Rios is an 11-year veteran of the force and an instructor at the police academy.
