SAN ANTONIO -- A San Antonio contractor is in jail after being accused of scamming elderly customers in several Texas cities.
Police first got reports in 2015 and had to find a consistent pattern of misconduct.
When you think about Texas weather, it has hurricanes, tornados, fires, floods, and authorities say scammers realize this and see elderly people as an opportunity.
"I didn't scam anyone,” said Skylar Buras.
The 31-year-old business owner of Buras Construction company also said it's very complicated and they're working through it.
Police say people with his company would go door to door and convince people, mostly elderly people, to sign a contract for home repairs and hand over a large amount of money. They say it would take months or years before they received any type of response.
In fact, there are people still waiting. In this case there are four victims. Three are 80 years old and the other is 77 years old.
Buras is facing enhanced felony theft charges because the victims are elderly.
"You have elderly folks in our community that can be scammed very easily. There are people out here that know that and they specifically target elderly people so they can take advantage of them. So that's why in the state of Texas we have that enhanced portion," said SAPD Officer Douglas Green.
According to the Better Business Bureau, in 105 Texas counties - that's about half the state - in the past three years they've gotten about 2,000 complaints against contractors; 500 of those have been reported in the San Antonio area alone.
Police are expecting more victims to come forward.
"We always recommend to get at least three different quotes or proposals, if you will. Make sure you're comparing a similar scope of work. So not just the cost, but the labor, the materials, the warranties they're offering, especially if we're getting folks from out of town after a natural disaster. You want to ask about warranties and how they're going to cover that in case something goes wrong," said Regional Director of the San Antonio BBB Miguel Segura.
Anyone with any information is asked to call police.
