SAN ANTONIO – A suspect is dead after Homeland Security opened fire in South Side San Antonio Tuesday morning.
The armed suspect was running down the street when the shooting began just before 7 a.m. at Ferndale and Vermont. At least 20 rounds were fired.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Texas Rangers, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were all assisting San Antonio police at the scene.
During a press briefing Tuesday morning, an FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Combs said multiple agencies were serving an administrative warrant in the area and that the subject of the warrant fled the scene. A small chase ensued, Combs said, and the subject of the warrant opened fire on Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers, and at least one returned fire, striking the suspect.
The suspect, Combs said, died at the scene. Investigators located a weapon on the deceased suspect, and one ERO officer was injured in the incident. Neither the extent nor the nature of the officer's injuries were immediately disclosed.
ICE released the following statement:
“On May 1, 2018, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) personnel were involved in an officer-related shooting. ICE can confirm the subject is deceased and that a firearm was recovered from the scene. Per agency protocol, ICE’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is reviewing the incident. The agency has no further comment at this time.”
