SAN ANTONIO — A new mascot will soon represent Lee High School.
The new “volunteer” will be a military service dog. Lee students in 9 – 11 grades and 8 graders who will attend Lee next year were allowed to submit ideas and a committee made up of Lee and district community members narrowed it down to three finalists.
Lee High School was previously named after Robert E. Lee. In October, the North East Independent school District voted to rename the school, Legacy of Educational Excellence. The new name does away with the reference to the Confederate general, but the acronym allows the school to go by Lee.
The name change came after a local and national debate on Confederate monuments. The board said the school should be named after an idea, not a person.
The mascot and the new school name, will go into effect at the conclusion of this school year.
