SAN ANTONIO — A hippopotamus who calls the San Antonio Zoo home wants to get to know a rather famous hippo a little better.

Meet Timothy. He's a 3-year-old male who been living in the Alamo City for a few months and keepers at the zoo are introducing him to a hippo training program.

Top of the list is Fiona. She's the hippo from Cincinnati that social media loves to keep in the spotlight.

But Timothy is going about his desired courtship in a very public way.

Zoo employees have posted letters to Fiona "from" Timothy, and they've quickly gone viral.

It's not up to the zoos, though.

Breeding programs like this go through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which keeps track of hippos and other animals across the country to keep genetics good for conservation.

"We work with other zoos to make sure these animals continue to thrive in the care of man. As they're disappearing in the wild, it's becoming more and more important for zoos to keep these species, study them, learn from them, and take those lessons back out into the wild and try to help the animals in the wild," said Tim Morrow, CEO of the San Antonio Zoo.
