-- The Shooting --

Moreno and fellow Officer Julio Cavazos, responded to a suspicious persons report near San Antonio College on June 29.

They pulled a vehicle over, and when they were about to approach, the gunman started shooting.

Moreno was shot in the head. He died on June 30.

Cavazos was shot in the chin, with the bullet lodging in his chest. He has been released from the hospital and is recovering.

Officer Julio Cavazos

San Antonio police say the gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head during the shootout.

SAPD Chief William McManus said the incident is a grim reminder of how dangerous police work can be.

"It's not a good feeling to know that two of your officers were shot when they were doing active patrol," McManus said.

Cavazos has also been with SAPD for a little over nine years.

-- 'Back the Blue' March --

Dozens of people marched from the Alamo to the San Antonio Public Safety Headquarters Thursday to show support for officers Moreno and Cavazos.

The "Back the Blue" march was organized to honor the bravery of the two officers as well as the department.

"It wasn't really much that we did that took up a lot of our time, this ain't nothing for what they do for us. This ain't nothing, they put their life on the line for us, so just going out and getting banners and organizing, it ain't nothing," said event organizer Chris Martinez.

-- Weekend of Honor --

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, 68 officers across the country have died in the line of duty so far this year. Twenty five of those were killed by gunfire, which is up 25 percent from the year before.

This weekend marks the one-year anniversary of the deaths of the five officers in Dallas. Dallas is coming together for a Weekend of Honor, where they also plan to pay tribute to fallen San Antonio officer Benjamin Marconi.
