SAN ANTONIO -- Reyna Torres Mendivil is the new Consul General of Mexico in San Antonio. She has experience leading consulates and was most recently in California and working out of Mexico City.

  • Formerly Mexico's General Director for the Protection of Mexicans Abroad
  • Also served as Mexican Consul in Fresno, California and deputy chief of mission at the Mexican Embassy in the Czech Republic

But the new consul says San Antonio is already proving to be a much busier place with 150 to 200 people visiting the office each day, with the agency providing everything from documentation services to assisting women who are victims of domestic violence.

Still, she says there are many others they need to reach.

"Of course this change in discourse, in the national discourse, has created an atmosphere of uncertainty and perhaps fear among some of our nationals. That is a new challenge for us," said Mendivil.

A challenge she says they’re tackling head on.

"Of course we have to be more proactive and to go out there, as I said, to bring those services to the community where they are. It is very important for them to be informed. And we have launched very important initiatives to bring the information to the people who need it," she added.

One important group she’s referring to are the Dreamer’s.

"I am a huge fan of the Dreamers," said Mendivil.

"These kids are amazing. They are a perfect example of what the Mexican community can be. They are engaged. They are engaged with their communities. They are outspoken and they are not afraid," she said.

Mendivil said in the coming weeks she’ll work to meet with as many dreamers as possible, to work closely with them and their families.

Aside from providing services, Mendivil says her goal is to help change the negative perceptions that some have of her and her country.
