SAN ANTONIO — Who better to break the ground for two new elementary schools than the excited students who will be filling the seats.

Young students turned the first shovels of dirt Thursday for the facilities set to replace Carroll Bell and Vestal Elementary.

Harlandale Independent School District says it was time to reinvent the two buildings that were each now more than 50 years old.

"We're excited about building new state of the art facilities. That again, that have classrooms that are modern and with mechanical systems. And classrooms that help accommodate the new strategies and learning styles in education," said Ray Madrigal, Harlandale ISD Superintendent.

The developers in charge of the two campuses say the projects are part of the $65 million bond passed in 2015 and the new buildings should be ready for the 2018-19 school year.
