SAN ANTONIO — Maria Medina is one of 250 Spectrum employees taking calls from potential customers.

"They train us in sales professionally,” said Medina.

The single mother got her job with the communications company because she speaks Spanish as well as English.

Now, because Spectrum's television, internet and phone services are in demand for a growing Latino population, 100 new bilingual positions will be added at this call center.

"Half of this facility will be bilingual in nature and will be able to take care of our diverse customer base,” said John Weger, Spectrum senior director.

"A lot of people on this side of town are looking for good work. So I think this is pretty good,” said Vanessa Galvan.

Another 100 English-speaking customer service jobs are also available.

The chief executive with the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce says these new positions are needed for the city's west side.

"To pay an average wage of $45,000 plus benefits is really going to help a lot of young people in San Antonio that are entering the workforce, looking to grow their career."

The local jobs push is the latest effort by Spectrum's parent company Charter Communications to bring home 20,000 U.S. jobs now outsourced overseas.

"I know there is going to be plenty of opportunities for growth going forward. So I count myself blessed every single day I come into this place,” said Jose Bonilla, a bilingual inbound sales representative.

Great news for the city on the rise.
