SAN ANTONIO — On Thursday the San Antonio Police Department gave members of the media a lesson in police psych training.

The four-hour abbreviated class for reporters, is designed to show how SAPD officers benefit from psychological instruction.

Part of the cognitive exercise includes playing a couple of rounds of Operation.

The game, among other lessons, teaches ways to better cope with high-stress situations to instructors. Clinical psychologists for SAPD created what is called the "Cop and Doc" program three years ago. Every cadet is required to take the course. Earlier this year veteran officers also began the training.

So far, half of all officers graduating from the program.

"We've been just really getting great reviews from the officers cause they really like it. And mostly, trying to demonstrate the fact that, that we really care about this. We really care about your performance and your family and we think this will help,” said Dr. Brandi Burke Clinical Psychologist.

Class directors say they plan to have all officers trained by the end of the year. Then in 2017, SAPD will offer an advanced three-day course.
