SAN ANTONIO—Thousands gathered downtown Friday to witness San Antonio's Passion of the Christ.

The play is held on Good Friday and details the Bible's story of Jesus of Nazarene, being executed by the Romans.

"They are going to make him drag the cross. And if he stops and doesn't walk fast enough, they're going to whoop him with a whip,” said elementary student Leonardo Torres.

The portrayal of the 2,000 year-old biblical account began at Milam Park. City streets were blocked off to allow the mobile show to make its way to the Cathedral. Many Catholic faithful were touched by the magnitude of the public event.

"I was called to witness this beautiful day to know that we are to be appreciative for being saved and redeemed,” said attendee Consuelo Villarreal.

The final act showed Jesus Christ nailed to the cross in front of the cathedral. Dozens of local actors participated in the theatric presentation which is hosted by San Fernando church.
