Around Texas
1. Democrats from across the country stop at Texas colleges to rally for Harris, Allred
Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., believes progressive turnout on Election Day will result in wins for Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris and Rep. Colin Allred in his bid to unseat Republican Sen. Ted Cruz.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York, Austin-area Rep. Greg Casar and former congressman and Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke joined Sanders to convince voters of all parties to oust Cruz.
In one of her recent TV ads, Democrat Michelle Vallejo accuses Republican U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz of two unforgivable political sins: jeopardizing Social Security and Medicare and working against efforts to lower health care and prescription drug prices.
But De La Cruz hotly disputes the claims, which the ad attributes to proposals from her Republican colleagues aimed at preventing Medicare and Social Security from going broke. De La Cruz said she views the entitlements as “vital lifelines for our seniors.”
3. Large number of uncontested state House and Senate races won’t sway legislative makeup
There are less than three weeks until the November general election. All 150 state House and 15 state Senate seats are up for grabs, but many races are uncontested.
Of the 15 state Senate races, there are five candidates who are running unopposed, and they are all Democrats. The majority of the uncontested races in the state House are also Democrats, but that isn’t expected to reflect in the makeup of the legislative body where Republicans are in the majority for both chambers.
