BOCA RATON, Florida — After a two-season hiatus from coaching, former Texas Longhorns football coach Tom Herman is back on the college football scene. Herman, who was fired in January 2021 after four seasons with Texas, has accepted a job with Florida Atlantic.

Herman spent the 2021 season as an NFL offensive analyst for the NFL's Chicago Bears and did not coach in 2022. Herman led the Longhorns to win the Sugar Bowl in 2018 and the Alamo Bowl in 2020.

Florida Atlantic fired head coach Willie Taggart last month after his third season with the Owls. According to Sports Illustrated, the Owls finished 5-7 this season and went 15-18 under Taggart.

"It is an honor to have the opportunity to lead the Florida Atlantic football program," Herman said in a news release from the football program. "I'm incredibly grateful to Brian White, President Kelly, Mary Giardina and everyone else who was involved in the search process. All the pieces are in place at FAU for us to be successful. There are already great young men on this team, great facilities, a great location, a great recruiting base and great leadership, all of which are important to building a successful program."

Herman had two successful seasons coaching Houston before taking the Texas job. He was previously an assistant at Ohio State (2012-14), Iowa State (2009-11), Rice (2007-08), Texas State (2005-06), Sam Houston State (2001-04), Texas (graduate assistant, 1999—2000) and Texas Lutheran (1998).
