FORT WORTH, Texas — Kuol Atak isn’t your stereotypical high school basketball player.

If anything, his game is old school.

“When you see like a 6’-9” African kid, you think oh he’s gonna be dunking everything, he’s gonna be tearing the rim off,” Atak said. “But no, I like shooting jumpers, fadeaway jumpers. One dribble pull up and get to the rim. Transition, catch and shoot, backdoor cuts. More just like crafty.”

The Fort Worth Haltom senior has been playing the game his entire life, but didn’t go all-in on organized basketball until he was 12 years old.

“Then I got to high school and then it kind of just lifted off with AAU,” Atak said. “I started getting better and better and then my name started getting bigger.”

Now he’s one of the best players in Texas in the Class of 2024. Once his senior year at Haltom is complete, he’ll head to Oklahoma to play for the Sooners.

“It really came down to the relationships with the coaches and how they recruited,” Atak said. “How can they develop me so I can be a better player? How I can go to the next level? How much do they need me more than they want me?”
