DALLAS — Universities in North Texas are following suit and banning the video-sharing app, TikTok, after Gov. Greg Abbott’s Dec. 7 directive order.
The University of North Texas, UT Dallas and UT Arlington have all restricted access to the app on the universities’ Wi-Fi and devices Wednesday.
Gov. Abbott’s directive bans the use of TikTok on any government-issued devices. The Republican governor, who was just re-elected for his third term, cites concerns about the safety of personal information in letters to Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Speaker Dade Phelan and other state officials.
“TikTok harvests vast amounts of data from its users’ devices — including when, where and how they conduct internet activity — and offers this trove of potentially sensitive information to the Chinese government,” reads one of the letters. “While TikTok has claimed that it stores U.S. data within the U.S., the company admitted in a letter to Congress that China-based employees can have access to U.S. data.”
The recent bans at UNT, UT Dallas and UT Arlington come after UT Austin’s ban of TikTok over its campus’ networks, according to a report from The Texas Tribune on Tuesday.
