PLANO, Texas — Rep. Van Taylor, R-Plano, made a shocking announcement Wednesday. He will not continue his campaign to seek reelection after reports of infidelity. In a statement Wednesday, the North Texas congressman admitted to the affair.

“About a year ago, I made a horrible mistake that has caused deep hurt and pain among those I love most in this world, I had an affair. It was wrong, and it was the greatest failure of my life,” Taylor said. “I want to apologize for the pain I have caused with my indiscretion, most of all to my wife Anne and our three daughters.”

The announcement comes after media reports claimed a woman had an affair with the representative and he sent her money.

Taylor received 49% of the vote in his primary and was heading into a runoff with Keith Self, a former Collin County judge. Self will be the GOP nominee for U.S. House District 3 once Taylor withdraws his name. The Democratic nominee is Sandeep Srivastava, who ran unopposed in his primary.

Self released a statement saying he plans to focus on building confidence with voters and winning the general election.

"Congressman Van Taylor has decided to suspend his campaign, and it is appropriate to respect his decision," Self said in statement. "I have been privileged to serve the communities in this Congressional District for over a decade, and I pledge to all the citizens of North Texas to serve them honorably and to the best of my ability."

Besides apologizing to his family, Taylor also apologized to his constituents.

“I have let down so many other family members, friends, colleagues, supporters, and the people of the 3rd Congressional District whom I have had the great honor and privilege to represent. I am truly sorry, and I hope in time I can earn their forgiveness,” Taylor said. “I have talked with Keith Self to let him know of my decision, and I wish him the best as he seeks to become the next congressman for this district.”

Taylor was first elected the 3rd Congressional District in 2019. Prior to that, he served in the Texas Senate and the Texas House of Representatives. He was one of only four Texas Republicans who voted to certify President Joe Biden’s win over former President Donald Trump.
