MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas — Texas state Rep. Dan Huberty, R-Houston, was taken into custody and charged with DWI Friday night after crashing his car into a minivan, according to the Montgomery County Police Reporter.

The Montgomery County Police Reporter shared video of the arrest on YouTube. As of Sunday morning it had been viewed thousands of times.

Three people in the minivan were reported to have sustained minor injuries. Huberty was not injured.

In a Facebook post Saturday, Huberty admitted his guilt, apologized for the crash and said he is seeking treatment for substance abuse problems.

“Last night I was driving under the influence of alcohol and involved in a minor automobile accident in Montgomery County. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured,” Huberty wrote. “I regret my actions and apologize to my constituents and my family. I know I have a problem and this incident serves as wake-up call for me. I am seeking treatment options to begin today.”

Records show Huberty was released on a $1,500 bond Saturday. His vehicle remains impounded, however.

Huberty has been a member of the Texas House of Representatives for District 127 in Harris County since 2011. He previously served as a trustee of the Humble Independent School District and from 2009 to 2010 served as its president.

The lawmaker is known for authoring House Bill 3, which was passed by the Texas Legislature in 2019. The sweeping school finance bill provides more money for Texas classrooms, increased teacher pay and reduced property taxes.
