CORPUS CHRISTIE, Texas — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Thursday held a news conference in Corpus Christi in which he announced a new vaccination initiative called Save Our Seniors.

As part of that program, Abbott said, more than 1,100 members of the Texas National Guard will be deployed to help in the effort to vaccinate homebound senior citizens.

The guardsmen will be broken up into teams, a news release states, and deployed across the state. Some members will focus on identifying seniors who need to be vaccinated and others will help to administer those COVID-19 vaccine doses.

“A key part of our mission in the fight against COVID-19 is to vaccinate seniors and those who are most at risk – and senior vaccination programs like the one here in Corpus Christi are crucial to accomplishing this mission,” Gov. Abbott said. “By implementing a similar model throughout the state, and with the support of the Texas National Guard, we will reach more homebound seniors in communities across Texas and provide them with these life-saving vaccines.”

The Save Our Seniors program is set to launch on Monday, March 1.
