PLANO, Texas – According to the results of a new study by personal finance website WalletHub, Plano, Texas, ranks among the safest cities in the U.S.

In fact, out of the 182 cities assessed, Plano came in third. The first and second spots are occupied by Columbia, Maryland, and South Burlington, Vermont, respectively.

When you hear “safety,” you may assume the study is limited in scope to violent crime. However, the study’s authors took 42 key indicators into account when compiling the list.

Some of those indicators include traffic fatalities, hate crimes, the unemployment rate, percentage of uninsured population, risk of natural disaster, and percentage of households with emergency savings.

Other Texas cities to make the list include Brownsville at number 43, Laredo at 49, Grand Prairie at 54, Arlington at 80, Corpus Christi at 86, San Antonio at 94, Fort Worth at 95, and Austin at 99.

Located about 20 miles north of downtown Dallas, Plano had a population of 259,841 as of the 2010 census.

The city is home to the headquarters of some of the country’s biggest corporations, including Cinemark Theaters, FedEx Office, Frito-Lay, J.C. Penney, Rent-A-Center, and Main Event Entertainment, among numerous others.
