A man serving time for killing his son in Seneca County in 2008 is now in California, awaiting another trial for the murder of his wife 17 years earlier.

Karl Karlsen will be tried in January for allegedly killing his wife Christina in Calaveras County. She died in a house fire in 1991.

Her death was first thought to be an accident, just like the death of Karlsen's son Levi. He admitted to kicking a jack out from under a truck, crushing his son underneath. Karlsen is serving a 15-year sentence for Levi's death.

Karlsen collected $900,000 from insurance policies after the deaths. Murder for financial gain is considered a "special circumstance" under California law and could qualify Karlsen for the death penalty.
