Columbia, S.C. — South Carolina State Senator Tim Scott has achieved a milestone in his career.

The North Charleston Republican is now included in the largest group of Black senators to ever serve.

Senator Scott was sworn in today as incoming chairman of the Senate’s Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee also will become the first Black chairman of a Senate standing committee.

“This milestone reinforces the staggering progress we’ve made and experience in America. I’m so blessed to be a South Carolinian, where people consistently judge, not on the color of one’s skin, but by the content of your character,” said Senator Scott in a X post.

Other U.S. Senators took to X to share kind words about Senator Scott as well, “So incredibly proud of [Tim Scott] for achieving a very special milestone in American politics by becoming the longest-serving African American senator in the history o the nation. This achievement was made possible because the voters of South Carolina believes in Tim Scott…” Sen. Lindsey Graham said.
