COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina inmates on Death Row will now have 35 days between executions. That was the decision rendered by the five justices of the State Supreme Court on Friday. This decision comes in the wake of a petition from current inmates on Death Row that petitioned for a minimum of 13 weeks.
In response to the request, the judgment read, "We deny Petitioners' specific request. We nevertheless recognize that a reasonable interval between the issuance of death notices is warranted."
In addition to that decision, the justices set the order for five death row inmates who have exhausted their appeals. That schedule will go into effect following the execution of Freddie Owens, scheduled for September 20th. Owens will be the first inmate in South Carolina executed in 13 years.
