HEMINGWAY, S.C. - The South Carolina Forestry Commission law enforcement division has made an arrest related to the fires in Georgetown County. Forestry Commission officers arrested Windell McDaniel, 63, of Hemingway on three counts of arson.

According to the Commission, McDaniel used an improvised incendiary device to intentionally set three different fires along Deep Creek Drive. The Forestry Commission reports that through their investigation, they saw camera footage where a vehicle registered to McDaniel was seen in the area where the fires started around the same time they began.

McDaniel was interviewed and then arrested early last week. If convicted of the arson charges, he faces a fine of not more than $5,000 or a prison sentence of not more than five years on each count.

Authorities have said that McDaniel is not associated with any other fires that have taken place in the Georgetown County area.
