Just days before many will celebrate the birth of Christ, the symbol most recognizable with him was re-installed at one of the upstate’s most popular landmarks.

The Fred W. Symmes Chapel, also known as Pretty Place, received extensive damage earlier this year when Hurricane Helene tore through the Carolinas.

Now, just days before Christmas and the new year, renovation work is nearing completion.

Over the weekend, the Pretty Place Facebook page celebrated a milestone with a picture of workers who re-installed the cross that sat at the front of the chapel.

Although the cross received no damage during the storm, it was removed while workers made repairs to the roof that was taken off by more than 50% as well as several support beams that had to be replaced.

The picture was shared with the message: “It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Construction is nearing completion, and it was deemed safe to re-install the cross.”

The cross installation signals that Pretty Place is nearly ready to resume having visitors as it will open to the public on Jan. 3.
