COLUMBIA, S.C. — The person accused of assaulting U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) in a Capitol Office building pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge on Wednesday.
According to the Associated Press, witnesses told police that James McIntyre, 33, of Chicago, shook Mace’s hand in an “exaggerated, aggressive” manner after approaching her in the Rayburn House Office Building on Tuesday.
Mace took to 'X' Tuesday evening, writing that she was “physically accosted” by a “pro-tr*ns man”. She later declined to be treated by a paramedic after her encounter with McIntyre, who was arrested Tuesday by the Capitol Police, according to a police affidavit.
Last month, Mace proposed a resolution that would prohibit any lawmakers and House employees from using “single-sex facilities other than those corresponding to their biological sex.” She claimed the bill is specifically aimed at Delaware Democrat Sarah McBride — the first transgender person to be elected to Congress.
McIntyre has been released from police custody.
