MONCKS CORNER, S.C. - The fallout continues in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. On Tuesday, Santee Cooper, the state's largest power provider, began a record spill that is expected to have effects late into the week. Ahead of the storm, officials began to lower the levels in Lake Marion as they anticipated high rainfall totals.

The spill is expected to release about one million gallons of water a second. As a result, officials anticipate flooding in the Santeer River floodplain starting Thursday or Friday. The biggest impact is expected in Georgetown. State and local officials are already on alert in case of potential hazards.

Santee Cooper encourages residents in the area to exercise extreme caution when traveling through the area this week. If you would like to receive notifications about spills by Santee Cooper, you can email them a request at OperationsPlanning@santeecooper.com.
