OHIO — Ohio's state parks were destinations for many travelers last year, as the Ohio Department of Natural Resources reports it had a record-breaking 1,112,179 overnight stays last year.
It beats 2023, the previous record-holding year, which had 1,098,932 overnight reservations, ODNR said.
“Ohio’s state parks are a cornerstone of our state’s identity, and we are thrilled to see so many families and adventurers embracing all the natural beauty and great outdoor opportunities our parks have to offer,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz in a release. “From camping under the stars to boating on our beautiful lakes, people are connecting with nature in new and meaningful ways.”
Of 2024's overnight stays in the state's 76 state parks, over 919,000 were at state-operated campsites, cabins, camper cabins and yurts. Around 192,500 nights were in one of the state park lodges and accompanying lodge cabins.
“The numbers reflect a continued growing trend of people discovering the joy of outdoor adventure and relaxation,” said Glen Cobb, chief of the ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft, in a release. “Whether it’s a weekend camping trip, a peaceful paddle on one of our scenic lakes, or simply enjoying a day hike, Ohio State Parks offer something for everyone.”
A study from Tourism Economics showed that Ohio state parks have an impact on the economy. The study states overnight park visitors spend $392 million annually on retail, food, beverages, lodging and more while visiting.
ODNR said over the last five years, there's been an increase in visitation and outdoor activities. For more information on Ohio's state parks, click here.
