BEREA, Ohio — The Ohio Turnpike has released data on the first quarter of 2024 including that customers traveled almost 648.7 million miles.
That’s an increase of just above 1% when compared to last year.
The data is further broken down by passenger vehicles, which traveled 364,974,303 miles, and commercial vehicles, which traveled 283,683,999 miles.
Those are some large numbers. For context, according to NASA, the moon is only 238,855 miles. That means Ohio turnpike drivers' total mileage represents about 2,712 trips to the moon.
The turnpike also noted an approximate 2% increase in the number of vehicles during this first quarter, with 11,072,584 vehicles using the 241-mile road during that that time period.
Of those vehicles, passenger cars accounted for 72.9% and commercial vehicles 27.1%.
Approximately 76.6% of travelers used E-ZPass, according to the release, indicating a 0.3% increase compared to 2023. For passenger vehicles, the increase was closer to 1% and for commercial trucks, closer to 0.2%.
