New York State Parks are hiring lifeguards to staff beaches and pools to ensure safe swimming spots for this summer.

Through Gov. Kathy Hochul's "You're Hired" program, efforts to recruit lifeguards are underway.

There are 1,100 lifeguard positions available at 70 beaches and pools across the state, according to the parks department. Pay starts at $21.86 per hour and can increase with experience.

More information, including a qualifying exam schedule, can be found on the parks department's website.

“All across our vast state, we depend on our dedicated New York State Park lifeguards as they play a critical role in protecting millions of patrons at our beaches and pools each year,” said State Parks Commissioner Pro Tempore Randy Simons. “This vital role in our parks not only offers an excellent opportunity to stay active, earn income and gain valuable experience, but allows individuals to serve the public."
