Two people have been shot and killed in Watertown, according to New York State Police.

The shooting happened at Bridgeview Real Estate Services on Clinton Street Wednesday afternoon, police spokesperson Jack Keller said.

Authorities identified the victims later Wednesday as Maxine M. Quigg, 50, of Wellesley Island, and Terence M. O’Brien, 53, of Black River.

Both victims worked at the Bridgeview Real Estate Agency where the shooting occurred.

Keller identified the suspected shooter as Barry Stewart, 55, of Carthage.

State Police said they saw Stewart in the suspected vehicle on State Route 11B in the town of Dickinson, in Franklin County, and attempted to pull the vehicle over. Stewart allegedly drove off the roadway and was found inside the vehicle with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to State Police. He was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Stewart's LinkedIn profile identifies him as an employee of Bridgeview Real Estate since 2012.

It also said he retired from the Army after serving for 25 years.

State Police are assisting Watertown Police in the investigation, Keller said.

"This is the type of thing we far too frequently see on the national news. We never think it could happen in the City of Watertown, but today it did," Watertown Mayor Jeff Smith said in a statement. "This is an unspeakable, senseless tragedy, where two innocent people were gunned down in a vicious act of violence. My heart breaks for the victims, their families and our entire community who I know share in my disbelief that this could happen here in Watertown."
