The campaign of Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin on Tuesday is set to widely release a 2-minute video highlighting his family's immigrant background and his life story.
It's a video that largely serves to introduce Benjamin to New York Democratic voters statewide, and comes as gubernatorial candidate Rep. Tom Suozzi is set to unveil his choice for lieutenant governor later on Tuesday in Brooklyn.
The video spotlights Benjamin's parents: His mother Yvonne immigrated to the U.S. from Guyana, his father Alvin from Jamaica.
The video, which also spotlights individual New Yorkers from around the state, is expected to be shown this week at the state Democratic convention in New York City.
"As the son of Caribbean immigrants, my family has lived the New York dream and our story and values drive my work as Lieutenant Governor every day,” Benjamin said. “Now, as we emerge from the pandemic, we all share a responsibility to keep that same dream alive for every New York–which is exactly what Governor Hochul and I are fighting for every day. As this campaign builds, I look forward to sharing more of my story–and the story of all New Yorkers–with voters across our state.”
Candidates for lieutenant governor run separately from the top of the ticket, and mismatches — a gubernatorial candidate running in a general election with a rival's choice for number two — can sometimes occur (just ask Carl Paladino and Greg Edwards in 2010, or Mario Cuomo and Al DelBello in 1982).
Benjamin was selected by Gov. Kathy Hochul to become lieutenant governor days after she was elevated to the governor's office last year. A former state senator, Benjamin had represented Manhattan in the chamber.
