A man accused of Friday's deadly shooting in Conklin killed his uncle, shot another family member and then fired at police, according to the Broome County Sheriff's Office.

Mathew Bartosik, 21, is accused of killing his uncle, Michael Lewis, 61, and shooting another family member, the sheriff's office said.

It says Lewis tried to break up an argument between Bartosik and his mother. That's when the suspect allegedly grabbed a gun, and shot Lewis and another family member.

Lewis died at the scene while the other victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, the sheriff's office said. Other family members were able to escape and call for help.

When the initial Broome County sheriff's deputy and a state trooper arrived on scene, Bartosik shot at them. Additional law enforcement officers arrived, and were able to coax Bartosik out of the home. He is charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder and weapons charges.

Broome County Sheriff's officials added that Bartosik did not own the alleged murder weapon legally, and are working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) on tracking down its origin.
