With no motorized watercraft allowed on it, Mirror Lake is one of those special spots that makes Lake Placid so unique.
“Mirror Lake is literally the the lifeblood of Lake Placid,” Mirror Lake Inn Operations Manager Andrew Weibrecht said.
On its shoreline sits a boutique family-owned hotel celebrating a major milestone. This year is the 100th anniversary for the Mirror Lake Inn.
“There's a certain feel and there's a certain personal touch that that transcends time. It transcends the trends that are going on,” Weibrecht said.
Weibrecht, a two-time Olympic medalist, and his family have owned the hotel for the last 50 years.
“It's very similar to a lot of the places that I ski when I was racing in Europe," he said. "You know, those are multi-generational. I mean, some of them, one of the places has been in the same family since 1100-something."
So what's the secret for a place like this?
“My dad has said for years that a house doesn't become a home until you put your love in it,” he said.
Weibrecht says he believes success builds from the small things, like having warm cookies available at check-in and having familiar faces during a stay.
“If somebody greets you at the door, if there's a family member that's there that really cares, that wants to see it thrive not only as a business but as an idea, can have it have a great impact on the type of experience that the guests have,” he added.
Experiences are a relatively new trend that the Mirror Lake Inn is taking advantage of.
“There's been a change over the last number of years where where people, they don't just want a hotel room,” he said. “They want a holistic experience where they're part of something bigger.”
As part of a package with a stay at the hotel, you can sign up for a skiing experience with Weibrecht or a couple of other Olympians. There are other excursions that guests can take to experience the Adirondacks during all seasons.
“We’re trying to provide those really unique, one-of-a-kind experiences that you can only get in an Olympic town like this,” Weibrecht said. “I really hope that that someday my kids are interested in coming and join the business."
Early next year, Lake Placid will host a celebration for the 45th anniversary of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games.
