Binghamton University is hosting a controlled bow hunt to combat its deer problem.

School officials say there are more than 250 deer on campus. In order to have a healthy forest, officials say there should only be 15-20 deer.

To combat the issue, the university is holding a controlled bow hunt December 16 through 19. The hope is the hunt will create a better experience on campus.

"I think we'll end up with a little better woods. The trees will grow a little better, I think it's just a good thing all the way around but we've got a problem with too many of them," said Joseph Vrablic, vestal resident.

Campus police will be blocking off entrances and exits to the campus Nature Preserve from 5 a.m. to 12 p.m.
