Saturday's snow did not stop Staten Island residents from recycling their old Christmas trees.

The annual MulchFest event took place at parks around the city, with several locations in the borough.

Old Christmas trees were dropped off at the Conference House Park site to be turned into woodchips.

"Great way to really feel like you are doing something for the city, and these trees get used immediately," said John Kilcullen, the director of the Conference House Park. "So this mulch doesn't sit; it is just spread out to a number of different sites throughout the city. So it is fresh, and those nutrients aren't going to waste."

The mulch is used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide.

Residents could even take home a bag of mulch to use in their own backyards.

MulchFest is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

The city's sanitation department also intends to conduct special curbside collections of Christmas trees until Jan. 14.
