WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- Police say over the past several months, they've cracked down on a drug ring operating in Watertown, leading to dozens of charges against seven people.
"Charges of A felony drug sales, B felony drug sales, felony conspiracy, and enterprise corruption," said Jefferson County District Attorney Kristyna Mills. "During the course of this investigation, both cocaine and heroin were recovered, along with approximately $7,500 and two handguns."
More than 3.5 ounces of cocaine and 37 envelopes of heroin were recovered. Officials say the apparent leader of the operation was 33-year-old Sigfrud Chest, who was arrested with one other person in November. He is currently out on bail.
Officials say 26-year-old Julian Miller, Jr., was one of Chest's top individuals. Miller was taken into custody last week with four other people.
While drug cases aren't anything new, Mills says this one stands out because of how organized the operation was.
"This was a fairly large operation," she said. "Normally we do not get operations that are this well-organized, which is why you'll see the result of the enterprise corruption charges. We've never charged those charges before."
"It seems like we're finally making good progress on, I don't know if you want to call it, the war on drugs, but with the recent uptick in heroin overdoses and heroin overdose deaths over the last couple of years ... it's nice to see in this case," said Watertown Police Chief Charles Donoghue. "It really pays off with some higher level drug charges and drug arrests."
Officials say many of the people connected with this case are affiliated with organized gang activity. Police are still investigating others and more charges are possible.
