WATERTOWN, N.Y -- Watertown police arrested 39-year-old Gregory Noonan on Thursday for the death of 39-year-old Barbara Getman, also known as Barbara Curry.

Noonan and Getman lived together at 217 South Pleasant Street and on Wednesday night, police responded to the home to find Getman unresponsive.

"They tried to treat her here at the scene. She was brought to the Samaritan Medical Center where she was pronounced dead," said Watertown Police Det. Lt. Joseph Donoghue.

Police say she died of blunt force trauma to the abdomen. Noonan is charged with second-degree murder.

Residents along the street and in the neighborhood said they're shocked.

"This has never happened before that I can think of. Not here," said neighbor Kevin Miller.

"I'm just very shocked and even for something like that to happen in Watertown is shocking when it does occur," said Amy Parker, who lives around the corner from the home.

Police say this isn't the first time they've been to the home.

"Both persons are known to the Watertown Police Department because, as I've said before, there have been other domestics with them," said Donoghue.

"It's not a surprise to me, because you always hear yelling and screaming come out of there, on occasion. I've heard it over the years," said neighbor Mark Smith.

Noonan was arraigned Friday morning and is currently being held in the Jefferson County jail without bail.

Noonan's preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 23.
