A Staten Island hospital is recognized for providing top-notch maternity care.

Richmond University Medical Center is now designated as a "Baby-Friendly" birthing facility.

It's part of a global initiative through the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund.

The organizations accredit hospitals for using best practices for infant-feeding and mother-baby bonding.

Hospital staff redesigned its protocol so mothers are with their newborns from the very beginning.

"Moms and babies are allowed to bond from the time they give birth throughout the entire stay here," said Nurse Victoria Orleman.

"From the minute the baby is born you're able to bond and learn about their routine," said New Mother Jacqueline Scafuri.

RUMC is one of 6 hospitals citywide to receive the accreditation.
