BUFFALO, N.Y. -- If you've noticed the color peeling off your license plate, you're not alone.
Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs said the manufacturing issue was originally thought to only appear with older white plates. Now the state said the newer yellow plates have the same issue.
Car owners in Erie County can go to a DMV office and get their plates replaced for free.
"Look at your license plates. If it's peeling, take advantage of this," Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard said. "Eventually, people will start being ticketed for it. Again, they could be ticketed for it now."
State law requires all license plates be readable.
